Order of the Crown
The Order of the Crown, created in 1897 by Leopold II, is a Belgian order of merit which rewards outstanding achievements in the fields of industry, commerce, science, education, culture and the armed forces. The Order of the Crown plays an important role in diplomatic awards and military recognition. The order is administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can be awarded to Belgians for outstanding service to the country.

The order was introduced in the bilingual country on 15 October 1897 as the "Ordre de la Couronne" or "Kroonorde" by Leopold II of Belgium.
The order is a modern order of merit. In 1908 regulations included "important artistic, literary or scientific merit, merit in the commercial or industrial world or for long loyal service to the country or in Africa".
The order is considered less meritorious than the Order of Leopold. The administration of the order is entrusted to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but the order is for services in all kinds of fields: industry, trade, science, education, the armed forces, culture and charity. The order is often used in diplomatic channels. The Belgian government awards the order within the context of state visits and, on the basis of reciprocity, on the departure of ambassadors recognised in Belgium.
